#100 Days of Home Ed…Day 87

Life sciences has always been a huge part of PanKwake’s education. My original FrugalFam blog was about environmentally-friendly, money saving ideas. I started that when she was little more than a baby.

Even Billy gets involved in our gardening lessons.

We began a community garden/allotment on the council estate where we lived with her father. We taught the children in her nursery about gardening…growing your own. Even in that teeny tiny flat in London, we claimed the pavement outside our window for container gardens. Even when people stole our rain gauge and put their cigarettes out in our lettuce.

Animals too have always been special to PanKwake. We have had three hamsters, a cat and too many fish to count. In fact, PanKwake says that if this YouTube thing does not work out then she is going to become an animal rescuer like Diego. Watch out Bendi Irwin; PanKwake is fast on your heels.

So a couple of weeks ago when we discovered the rim of what we thought might be a pond in the backyard, we were delighted. PanKwake had been fascinated by the small one in one of her friend’s allotment. And she loved visiting the nature preserve near our temporary housing because it had a real pond that was full of tad poles.

Then yesterday while I was attempting to mow the field that we call a backyard, she and Cookie Monster began the process to unearth the one that is buried there. And we were all shocked at what they found…

The thing is eighteen inches to two feet deep in the center (or what we think is the center…might be another whole layer in there?). It is at least a meter across and close to seven or eight feet long. You could bury a body in there. OK…maybe not quite deep enough.

It seems to be in pretty good condition too. Only found one small crack/hole in it so far.

Best of all, Cookie Monster has promised PanKwake that even if the frogs do not come back next year to spawn (we did find frog spawn on the grass this year though) we would get some and begin a whole new family of them.

That is #RadicalUnschooling…life. Real life…wildlife too.
